Away from the tourists and into the real Venice

venice-backlanes.gif

Venice is one of the most amazing places you could ever visit, but like all popular spots it is geared for the tourist, over commercialised and geared to catch the tourist dollar. But there is an easy fix just get yourself lost, go for a walk up some of the more backstreet lanes- they are relatively safe and you are sure to find a ‘real’ Venice cafe or restaurant the people will be friendly and the prices will usually be much lower than what you will see around the square and best of all there wont be thousands of tourists. Try some real Venice pasta, not the mass produced bland stuff made for the tourist’s taste buds. Many of the smaller establishments are family ran so you will enjoy some traditional cooking and friendly faces it will really make your trip to Venice more memorable. Read the rest of this entry »

Dubai to knock back Hooters plan

The popular restaurant chain Hooters which is very popular throughout the US for its food, well lets face it- it’s hot waitresses wearing tight T Shirts and short orange shorts has sold franchises rights to a company in Dubai for a Dubai chain of restaurants. The plan was going pretty well and with so many American and western people working or visiting this booming city the owners of the chain could see huge success awaiting, with the first Hooters expecting to open later this year. Then along came the Dubai Department of Economic Development and they pointed out that hot waitresses wearing tight T shirts and shorts isn’t really the thing to do in Dubai as it is in violation of the Muslim Emirate’s “Religion, tradition and Culture”. So we now have a bit of a stand off and it looks like Dubai Hooters may not get to its opening day, which some say cast doubts on some other western concepts being tried in the region. Time will tell whether the mighty dollar or tradition and culture win. Read the rest of this entry »

Acthung! Hot Chips

hot-chips-vending-machine.gif

We have all seen vending machines serving soft drinks, coffee and chocolates and even vending machine restaurants in Japan, but here’s a first, sitting quietly on a subway station in the German City of Berlin is this amazing machine – it cooks and serves hot chips or pommes as the Europeans like to call them. You put your Euro in the slot press a button, a lot of noises go on then in 45 short seconds (and hopefully before your train arrives) a bucket of crisp freshly fried hot steaming chips appear… Delicious

Mc Spam? only in the USA

mc-spam.gif

Spam has been notorious over the years for being the mystery meat in a can, no its not made of cute little kittens it is in fact made of a mixture of ham and pork with some spices to add a bit of flavour. In Hawaii they love it, they are the worlds largest consumer of this tasty product and now giant fast food giants Mc Donald’s and Burger King have got in on the act and are selling it on their breakfast menus. Mc Donald’s have 78 outlets in Hawaii and are trying their special eggs, rice and spam meal until the end of July. After then they may ad it to their regular menu if it becomes a popular as they expect. Hawaii’s 7 Eleven chain have also got on in the act, and hope to attract some of the huge Japanese tourist numbers to their stores with a Spam musubi wrapped in rice and seaweed… how yummy!

You might have seen this giant donut in a few of the Simpson’s episodes but I’m here to tell you it is real. The donut can be found in Inglewood California a suburb of Los Angeles on Manchester Blvd. Unfortunately it isn’t made of dough but the donuts Randy’s sell are huge. Randy’s isn’t the only giant donut in the US there are quite a few others including Kiddles. It can be found at Normandie Ave Los Angeles. Kiddles sell a Texas sized glazed donut which is over 12 inches wide and full of artery hardening stuff. So if you are feeling hungry while driving around Los Angeles- you now know where to go.

KFC Monster Zinger

kfc-zinger.gif

Take a look at this Zinger meal deal- this was purchased in Honolulu Hawaii, -You wouldn’t want to take your shirt off on Waikiki beach after eating one of these monsters, and its just the standard meal, you could upsize to a medium and a large. what are they thinking. No wonder the average American is huge- this one alone is enough to feed a whole family- the big one would probably stop famine in a small country. Read the rest of this entry »

A Munich delicacy is the this Kartoffel a shredded potato Pattie which is fried in hot oil until golden brown and then served with apple sauce. It is a great snack and goes well with a nice cold beer.

This photograph was taken at the Kartoffelhaus stand at Munich’s Oktoberfest where thousands were served every day and for only one Euro its not hard to see why. No visit to Munich would be complete without trying one or two of these tasty treats. Read the rest of this entry »

There’s no swine here!

smoked-herring.gif

Oktoberfest in Munich Germany is all about beer, swine and fun but one tent dares to be different it serves smoked herrings. These tasty morsels are cooked in large charcoal grills outside the pavilion as they would smell it out. You can smell these fish a mile off- well not quite but they do have a distinctive strong odour. Hundreds are served every hour on a platter with salad, pate, bread and other German specialties. Giant Schnitzels

schnitzelwelt.gif

You can travel the world looking for the best schnitzel but you would be wasting your time unless you go straight to Austria and find Schnitelwelt. They have the juiciest schnitzels you have ever tasted. Schnitzelwelt appeared to be a chain and can be found in about 6 locations throughout Austria, they are a bit like KFC or McDonalds only they sell schnitzels. There are quiet a few varieties to choose including Beef, Pork, Chicken Vegetable and Surschnitzel, which is a sour pork fillet and Fisch (which I believe is fish). The meal is served quiet simply on a plate with some chips and some dips. The restaurants are also licensed so you can get a nice cold Austrian beer and they have great donuts for desert- that’s if you can fit one in. My suggestion is go the meal deal, schnitzel, beer and donut, or if you are real hungry try a trio of schnitzel. The tasty treat pictured above was from the Villach store.
